Aranesp (generic: darbepoetin alfa) is a prescription medication used to treat a lower than normal number of red blood cells (anemia) caused by chronic kidney disease or chemotherapy. Aranesp belongs to a group of drugs called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). These medications work by causing the soft tissue inside the bones where blood cells are made (bone marrow) to make more red blood cells. 

Aranesp comes in an injectable form that may be given by injection under the skin or by IV. It is usually given once every 1 to 4 weeks.
 
Common side effects of Aranesp include difficulty breathing, cough, and tiredness.
