Augmentin (generic: amoxicillin/clavulanic acid) is a prescription medication used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, including infections of the sinuses, ears, lungs, skin, and urinary tract. It is a single product containing two medications, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

Amoxicillin belongs to a group of drugs called penicillin antibiotics, which work by stopping the growth of bacteria. Clavulanic acid belongs to a group of drugs called beta-lactamase inhibitors, which work by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin.

This medication comes in tablet, chewable tablet, and powder for oral suspension forms that are taken 2 to 3 times a day with food.

Common side effects of Augmentin include diarrhea, nausea, and rash.
