Flagyl (generic: metronidazole) is a prescription medication used to treat infections of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, reproductive system, and other areas of the body. Flagyl belongs to a group of drugs called antibiotics, which help to stop the growth of bacteria in the body.

This medication comes in immediate release capsule, tablet, and extended release tablet forms. It also comes in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV) by a healthcare professional. Flagyl can be taken up to 4 times a day, with or without food.
