Indocin (generic: indomethacin) is a prescription medication used to treat pain and inflammation caused by a variety of conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gouty arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis. This medication belongs to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by blocking substances called prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation.

Indocin comes in capsule, oral suspension (liquid to take by mouth), and suppository forms. Take capsules and oral suspension (liquid) by mouth. Insert Indocin suppositories into the rectum.  It is usually taken 2 to 4 times daily with food and a full glass of water to minimize stomach upset.

Common side effects include stomach pain, nausea, and heartburn. Indocin can cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
