Protopic
Protopic Overview

Protopic (generic: tacrolimus) is a prescription medication used to treat severe eczema, a skin disease causing skin to be dry and itchy, scaly, and to form red rashes. It is intended for short-term use in patients with healthy immune systems, and only after other treatments have not worked.

Eczema is a type of allergic reaction in which your immune system becomes too active and causes damage to the skin.  Protopic is in a class of drugs called macrolide immunosuppressants.  It works by lowering the immune response so that the skin can heal.

This medication comes in an ointment to be applied on the areas of the skin where eczema occurs, usually twice a day.

Common side effects of Protopic include stinging, burning, and itching of the skin where Protopic is applied.
