Prozac (generic: fluoxetine) is a prescription medicine used to treat depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia, and panic disorder. Prozac belongs to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by changing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain that affect your mood.
Prozac is available as a capsule and a liquid to be taken by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice daily, with or without food. Prozac Weekly is available as a capsule that is taken once weekly, with or without food.
Common side effects of Prozac include unusual dreams, sexual problems, and loss of appetite. Prozac can also cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Prozac affects you.
