Rapamune (generic: sirolimus) is a prescription medication used to prevent kidney transplant rejection.  Rejection is when your body’s immune system recognizes the new organ as a “foreign” threat and attacks it. Rapamune belongs to a group of drugs called immunosuppressants, which prevent the immune system from attacking the transplanted kidney. 

This medication comes in tablet and liquid forms.  Rapamune is taken once a day. The tablets should be swallowed whole, with or without food.  The liquid should be kept refrigerated and mixed with water or orange juice immediately before it is taken.

Common side effects of Rapamune include high blood pressure, pain, diarrhea and headache.
