Vicodin (generic: hydrocodone/acetaminophen) is a prescription narcotic medicine used for moderate to moderately severe pain. It is a single tablet containing 2 medications, hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is a narcotic or opioid pain reliever. Hydrocodone also suppresses cough. Acetaminophen (trade name Tylenol, commonly abbreviated as "APAP") is a pain and fever reducing medication.

This medication comes in tablet form in several strengths including:

• Vicodin 5/300 - 5 mg hydrocodone and 300 mg acetaminophen
• Vicodin ES 7.5/300 - 7.5 mg hydrocodone and 300 mg acetaminophen
• Vicodin HP 10/300 - 10 mg hydrocodone and 300 mg acetaminophen

It is usually taken every 4 to 6 hours, as needed, with or without food. Taking Vicodin with food may minimize stomach upset.

Common side effects of Vicodin include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, and vomiting. Prolonged Vicodin use may lead to constipation. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how you react to this medicine.
