Xanax (generic: alprazolam) is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorder. Xanax belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines, which work by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

This medication comes as an immediate-release tablet and as an extended-release tablet (Xanax XR). The immediate-release tablet is usually taken 2 to 4 times daily. The extended-release tablet must be swallowed whole, and is usually taken once daily in the morning. They both can be taken with or without food.

Common side effects include drowsiness, tiredness, and appetite changes. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Xanax affects you.
