Cogentin (generic: benztropine) is a prescription medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders caused by certain medical conditions or psychiatric medications. This medication belongs to a group of drugs called anticholinergics. It works by blocking the effects of a certain brain chemical to establish a normal balance of chemicals in the brain.
Cogentin comes in tablet form. While some people experience the most relief of symptoms by taking the entire dose at bedtime; others react more favorably to divided doses, two to four times a day.
Common side effects include dry mouth, difficulty urinating, and constipation. Cogentin can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
